The Lewiston Maineiacs may have forgotten how to play an entire 60 minutes of hockey against the St. John’s Fog Devils on Wednesday, but on Friday the team used every minute of its game against Halifax to wear the Moosehead down, upending the host team 4-2 in front of 7,863 at the Halifax Metro Centre.
Stefan Chaput had two goals and Eric Castonguay added another, all in the final 3:56 of the game to rally the Maineiacs from a 2-1 deficit. Castonguay’s marker came on the power play, and Chaput’s were both even-strength, unassisted goals.
The Maineiacs fired 51 shots at Halifax netminder Jeremy Duchesne. At one point, the Mooseheads goalkeeper had stopped 39 of 40 Lewiston shots. On the other end, the defense was tight and allowed just 17 shots to reach Jonathan Bernier. Lewiston’s 17-year-old goalie allowed only two power play goals in the opening frame to earn the win.
Ryan Hillier and Franklin MacDonald scored for Halifax, and the Mooseheads went 2-for-8 with the extra skater.
Marc-Andre Cliche, who was recently named the team’s new captain, pulled the Maineiacs to within one at 2-1 midway through the second period, setting up the dramatic third-period.
Lewiston plays two more games this weekend, both at Cape Breton, tonight and Sunday afternoon.
