There has been a Jeremy Shorey sighting in Bangor.

Shorey, who was a Milwaukee Brewers farmhand as a pitcher, has maintained his football eligibility and has returned to the gridiron to assist the young varsity program at Husson College.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Shorey is listed as a sophomore tight end, which is not completely unfamiliar territory. Shorey starred as a wide receiver on Lisbon High School’s 1997 Class C championship team before moving to quarterback.

He’s slotted as a backup QB for Husson, partially because David Chase of Sabattus (Oak Hill) has put his stamp on the starting job. Chase averaged a touchdown pass per start last season for Husson, which went 2-7.

Shorey caught a six-yard touchdown pass from Chase last Saturday as Husson rolled to a 62-14 win over Mount Ida College at its Homecoming game.

Chase completed 13-of-21 passes for 203 yards and four TDs. Senior fullback Jason Jack of South Paris (Oxford Hills) also rushed for a score. Defensively, Jon Tefft of Lisbon intercepted a pass.

Husson travels to Southern Virginia University on Saturday.

Among the other local players on the current roster are freshmen Broc Hardacker and Anthony Witham (Leavitt) and defensive end/running back Scott Wetherell (Buckfield).

Four if by sea

Maine Maritime Academy football is off to a 4-0 start with a significant boost from freshman defensive back Nate Bolduc of Farmington (Mt. Blue).

Bolduc’s interception set up a touchdown in a 21-13 win over Mount Ida. In the following week’s 28-21 Homecoming triumph over Curry, Bolduc made a dozen tackles, including five solo stops.

Last week, the Mariners knocked off Nichols, 38-13, and Bolduc’s performance put him on the New England Football Coaches’ defensive honor roll. Bolduc made six solo tackles and eight total stops, returned an interception 24 yards and knocked down four passes in the secondary.

MMA senior fullback Don Thibodeau (Lawrence) rushed for 311 yards.

Freshman tight end Garrett Lake is another Mt. Blue alumnus at Maine Maritime. Adam Clark of Jay is a junior defensive lineman for the Mariners.
