Everything that seemed to go right for the Lewiston Maineiacs in a 2-2 Monday tie with Chicoutimi came crashing down Tuesday in Baie-Comeau.
Jean-Francois Jacques scored four goals and had an assist and Martin Mandeville had five assists as the Drakkar pounded the Maineiacs 9-2 at the Centre Harvey-Leonard Tuesday night, defeating Lewiston for just the third time in the team’s brief history.
Thomas Fendek, Alexandre Picard-Hooper, Jonathan Duchesneau and Joakim Jensen all had multiple points for Baie-Comeau, which improved its season record to 15-16-3-2. With 35 points, the Drakkar are now four points back of Lewiston in the overall standings as the Maineiacs fall to 16-17-7.
Colby Gilbert notched his second career goal and second in as many nights in the loss, while Sheldon Wenzel scored his sixth of the season.
The loss also snaps the Maineiacs’ five-game unbeaten streak that started nearly three weeks ago, and breathes life into cellar-dwelling Baie-Comeau’s sails.
The Drakkar sprinted out to a 2-0 lead after just five minutes, and added three more in the final five minutes of the opening frame to blow the lid off the game early. Duchesneau, Jacques, Mathieu Gravel, Picard-Hooper and Nicolas Robillard all scored for the Drakkar in the first.
Travis Fullerton, who played solidly in net against Chicoutimi, allowed six goals on 20 shots in just 22 minutes of work.
In the second, with Fullerton between the pipes, Jacques scored his second of the game to knock the rookie netminder from the game. Marc-Andre Perron finished the game and allowed three goals on 18 shots.
Gilbert got the Maineiacs on the board at 10:39 of the second with an unassisted tally, but Jacques came back and scored two more over the next three minutes to all but seal the win for the home team.
Jensen and Wenzel traded goals in the third to complete the scoring.
Lewiston will now enjoy six days off before returning home to the Colisee to face Chicoutimi on Wednesday, Jan. 5.
League Notes: Quebec pulled off a minor deal with Drummondville on Tuesday, sending third-string netminder Jean-Michel Cote to the Voltigeurs for goaltender Jonathan Laniel, who is currently playing in Junior AAA. Since a three-trade flurry to open the trading period, teams have been relatively quiet so far. Trading in the QMJHL ends this year on Jan. 8.
