RUMFORD – A senior night is always special for the Mountain Valley football team, which certainly put its best foot forward in a Class B cross-over tilt at Hosmer Field Friday night.

Aaron Arsenault ran for 134 yards and three touchdowns and Pat Knapp Chris Smith each had two TDs as the Falcons cruised to a 53-6 win against Leavitt. It’s the fourth time in the past five games that Mountain Valley had scored over 40 points.

Mountain Valley (8-1) and Leavitt (5-4) have each earned playoff berths in its respective divisions. The playoffs begin next week.

Chris Smith and Arsenault each scored two-yard TDs as the Falcons marched 68 and 66 yards, respectively. The drives were highlighted by a 29-yard pass to Shawn Marr and 39-yard run by quarterback Zach Fergola.

Ben Madigan kicked both extra points as the Falcons sealed the outside with excellent blocking. The Leavitt ends were in three-point stances and couldn’t prevent the Falcons’ pulling guards from getting position

“It’s the line,”Arsenault said. “They are getting some great blocks, so all I need to do is run behind them.”

Mountain Valley proved to be equally stout defensively, holding the Hornets to minus 10 yards on eight running plays in the first half. End Chris Lever, linebackers Travis Fergola and Brandon Bradley and lineman Thaddeus Bennett each were key factors.

Leavitt QB Matt Cote (4 of 8 for 92 yards, interception) stopped the bleeding, momentarily, with a 68-yard pass catch and run to Broc Hardacker. The receiver was wide open and then cut back to get by the corner back.

“We knew that we needed to come out strong,” Travis Fergola said. “We expected Leavitt to try some tricks, but every one stayed at home and got the job done. This team is unbelievable.”

Mountain Valley iced the game by scoring on a 42-yard fumble return by Korey Stairs to give the Falcons a 32-6 lead early in the third quarter. Fergola forced the fumble from Matt Worcester. On the previous play, the Hornets’ Tyler Angell had recovered a fumble.

Mountain Valley started two drives in Leavitt territory in the third quarter. Knap scored on a one-yard run and Smith (81) sprinted in from 24 yards. Andy Shorey had recovered a fumble. Devin Roberts ran in a three-yard TD in the fourth quarter.

“We came out strong,” Travis Fergola said. “That was the turning point of the game. Every one played hard.”
