AUBURN – The St. Dom’s Saints have won 13 in a row heading into today’s Class C title game against defending state champion George Stevens Academy (noon, Gorham High School). In that time, the Saints believe they have seen everything.
Everything, that is, except a left-handed pitcher.
But that’s what will be waiting for the Saints when they step up to the plate today. GSA’s top two pitchers are left-handers, including as Collin Henry, who they expect to face.
“We did some left-handed batting practice (Thursday) and we tried to prep the kids as best we could,” said Saints’ coach Allan Turgeon. “I think we’ll be ready for it. Our kids are smart baseball players and over the years we’ve faced lefties. Last year we had a lot of success, so I think we’ll do alright.”
Henry (6-1) is a sophomore who last threw one week ago today in the Eagles’ 8-1 win over Houlton, scattering five hits over six innings and striking out eight without allowing a walk. The southpaw throws strikes with both his fastball and breaking ball, and he likes to work hitters away. The Saints will have to be disciplined at the plate and hit the ball the other way.
St. Dom’s boasts a deep and balanced lineup led by four-five hitters Jack Lavoie and Jon Rutt. The duo is most dangerous with men on base, and Ian Pullen, Josh Dwinal and Ryan Turgeon usually oblige.
Pullen (5-0) will likely get the call on the mound for the Saints. The senior also last pitched a week ago, against Telstar, yielding two runs, seven hits and four walks while fanning five in eight innings in a 3-2 extra-inning victory.
The Eagles will counter with an offense led by Will Rosenthal, Adam Cousins and Harrison Hines, seniors who will be playing in their third state championship game in a row.
“They’ve got a real good club. They’re sound with very good pitching and they play good defense,” Turgeon said. “I think that they’re going to come ready to play, and I also think that we’re ready, so it’s going to be a good game.”
