Becky Lewis and Catlin Rutt each chip in with a goal and an assist.
AUBURN – When things are clicking on all cylinders, it’s nearly impossible to derail the St. Dom’s field hockey team.
And coach Brian Kay was sure pleased to see his players rise to the occasion in a Class C Western Maine Conference game Monday afternoon.
Forward Becky Lewis and midfielder Catlin Rutt proved to be major forces as each scored a goal and earned an assist to lead the unbeaten Saints to a 3-0 win over Freeport.
St. Dom’s goalie Llissa Vallee made three saves to record the shutout, allowing only two goals this season. The Saints received a strong contribution from fullback Julie Vandermeulew who stepped forward several times to prevent the Falcons from flooding the zone.
“We was definitely pleased with the offensive flow,” Rutt said. “A big key for us was that every one was working together.”
St. Dom’s (6-0) received its first goal when Lewis drilled the ball past Falcon goalie Bekka Powers with 13 minutes remaining in the first. Ruff’s initial shot was stopped, but the rebound found Elisha Dorso’s stick and she quickly fed Lewis.
St. Dom’s had been on an offensive and forced the Freeport defense to pack in the zone. Falcon sweeper Lindsay Nason rotated behind to clear a shot, but Rutt tracked it down.
“Our passing really helped,” Elisha Dorso said. “It allowed us to open things up and get down the field.”
St. Dom’s created an insurmountable 2-0 lead when senior Erica Dorso scored a goal with 16.7 seconds remaining in the first half. Lewis set up Dorso on the right wing. The Saints had several solid rushes and had a 26 to six advantage in shots taken.
Freeport (3-3) bottled the field up with improper spacing and it allowed the Saints to shorten the field by overloading to the ball. The Falcons biggest threat was Kelly Mehler who rushed in on the left wing, but Vandermeulew slid over to break up the play.
