Nicholas Mello punches in the game-winning goal for the Wildcats.

ORONO – Nicholas Mello converted a corner kick from Tyler Jackson to score the only goal UNH would need to cement a 1-0 win over the University of Maine in men’s soccer Wednesday.

Mello’s goal came at 57:20 into the game. Wildcats’ (5-2-0, 1-0-0) goalkeeper Mike Vignola made six saves to preserve the shutout. Chad Mongeon also stopped six shots while in net for the Black Bear (3-3-0, 0-1-1) effort.

Women’s soccer

Colby 6, UMF 0

FARMINGTON – Liz Morbeck netted a pair of goals to lead Colby to a 6-0 shutout over the University of Maine at Farmington in women’s soccer Wednesday. Laura Williamson, Kara McCabe, Kaitlin Herlicky and Dianne Tetrault all tallied single goals for the Mules (2-0-1).

Patty Boutin made six saves for UMF.

Eastern Nazarene 1

BIDDEFORD – Kerry Webber tallied the game’s first goal as the University of New England jumped out to a quick lead just eight minutes into the first half.

Kristen Rivera found the back of the net with 15 minutes left in regulation as Eastern Nazarene College tied the score at 1-all to force a double overtime period that saw both squads unable to score.

Amanda Brown made 10 saves for the Nor’easters, while Tanya Oconos made three.

Gordon College 2, USM 1

GORHAM – Lindsey Benson netted a pair of goals as Gordon College held off a late rally by the University of Southern Maine to post a 2-1 triumph Wednesday.

Benson netted the game-winner in the 66th minute of play. Ashley Gates delivered a long pass that Benson tracked down and rifled into the near corner for the Fightin’ Scots (2-3-1).

Amanda Valeriani converted a pass from Kristen Chandler to score the lone goal for the Huskies (3-1-1).

Mary Griffenhagen made five saves for the win, while Marcy Ansley finished the contest with three saves for the Huskies.

Baseball

CMCC 17, NHTI 1

AUBURN – Nate Olson smacked two homers to lead CMCC to a triumphant 17-1 win over NHTI in fall college baseball action Wednesday. Tom Mason was strong on the mound for the Mustangs, giving up only one run in seven innings.
