LEWISTON — Planners are ready to unveil two years’ worth of work and recommendations for rewriting open space land use rules Monday.
“We’re hoping to get people involved in the process now because we’re not finished yet,” said Planner David Hediger. “We’re at the point where we need public input to make sure we have the right idea.”
The new rules would let developers divide large rural lots into more, smaller parcels as long as they devote larger chunks to open space.
“We found that the current rules weren’t doing enough to protect the rural character of those parts of our city,” Hediger said.
Monday’s discussions are part of a larger zoning code review that staff has been working on since 2007.
“We began looking at one small part, but just kept finding more and more that needed to be done,” he said.
Review of a proposal to do away with the city’s suburban residential zoning district is scheduled for Aug. 17, and a review of a new organization scheme for the city’s land use codes is scheduled for Sept. 14.
Hediger said he’d like to see a public hearing on the changes go before the planning board for a formal review in the fall. Councilors could vote on the changes later this year or early in 2010.
