CANTON — Selectman Don Hutchins told board members Thursday night that the owner of the Canton Mountain Wind project has agreed to donate $15,000 toward construction of a snack shack at the town baseball field.

Patriot Renewables of Quincy, Mass., is asking town officials for a letter stating the town will donate toward the cost, Hutchins said. Canton plans to donate all of the labor.

After the letter is sent, the town will receive $7,500 to start the work, he said.

In other business, selectmen interviewed two candidates for code enforcement officer before their meeting. They will make a decision on the one-year appointment at their meeting Jan. 25.

Town Administrator Scotty Kilbreth, who has been code officer six or seven times since 1988, resigned the position in October.

Selectmen reappointed Faith Campbell to a one-year term on the Budget Committee. She has served six terms since December 2013.

“I’ve enjoyed (serving on the committee) and I think the Budget Committee works well together,” Campbell said.

Selectmen were not sure if Budget Committee members Sherri Vaughan and Donna Hebert will seek reappointment.

In another matter, Hutchins asked selectmen whether they should have a liaison for the town’s food bank at the fire station.

“We ought to just kind of pay attention and help out when we can,” he said. “It’s pretty sad to say that we have 50 families who go to the food bank, out of 900 people in the town. That’s more than 10 percent of our people.”

Hutchins also mentioned having a lock box at the food bank entry door because of problems “juggling keys” for people entering with donations. The food bank is open at 9 a.m. Sundays.

No decision on a liaison or lock box was made.

Town Clerk Kathy Walker said the town will hold a Mardi Gras celebration at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Canton Historical Society building, 25 Turner St.

Partygoers will dine on gumbo, jambalaya and po’ boy sandwiches.

“King Cake ordered from the world-famous Manny Randazzo, New Orleans’ choice for King Cakes and a Mardi Gras tradition for decades” will be served for dessert, Walker said.

Tickets are $20 per person and are on sale at the Town Office.

Proceeds will go toward the Canton Bicentennial Celebration in the summer of 2021.

The board set the town meeting for 6 p.m. Thursday, June 14, at the Town Office.
