LEWISTON — Another group of Maine zombies plans to dance in Saturday’s “Thrill the World” event.

Students from Gray-New Gloucester Middle School plan to raise money for their drama club by selling tickets to their performance, joining a synchronized, worldwide dance of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” In nearly 400 locations, dancers will mimic the zombies in Jackson’s 1983 music video.

At least 80 people will dance, many dressing up as zombies for Saturday’s performance, said Michelle Guerard, the school’s assistant drama coach.

People who attend Friday night’s football game between Gray-New Gloucester High and Wells High will get a sneak peak, since the dancers plan to perform “Thriller” as the half-time show.

Drama students have been been practicing for several weeks and seem fascinated by the fact that they will be part of a simultaneous event celebrated in many countries.

“It’s opened their eyes up to the world,” Guerard said.

The event is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. with a potluck supper and several contests, including the choice of “best zombie walk” and “best scream.” Dancers may join the effort for free, but spectators will be charged $5 each, Guerard said.

A Lewiston-Auburn group already announced it was taking part in the dance, gathering people at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee for a rehearsal and performance. All participants will be charged a $5 registration fee. The money raised is to be turned over to the art and music teachers to buy supplies at Lewiston’s Trinity Catholic School.
