100 years ago, 1909

For the second time this season the Waseca Club administered a drubbing to the Ariel Club on the baseball diamond when on Saturday the Auburn team won by the score of 12 to 2. Many errors were responsible for the big score, a number of the Lewiston players putting up a wretched exhibition. Newton pitched good ball but could do nothing with the ragged support behind him. The Auburn team played steady ball at all times.

50 years ago, 1959

The J. J. Newberry Co. store is slated to close and Montgomery Ward & Co. may shift its operations when the leases on the Lisbon Street locations expire, it was reported yesterday.

A Newberry’s official said the store is not breaking even under present business conditions and probably will close when the lease runs out. It has been reported that Montgomery Wards would not renew its lease and may move to another location or open only a mail-order house here.

25 years ago, 1984

Lewiston-Auburn service clubs will be encouraged to “adopt a spot,” a project among the beautification goals being considered by the Chamber of Commerce’s Beautification Committee, says Carol Tracy, vice president of a Chamber committee that is spearheading an overall program to clean up the Twin Cities.

The adopt-a-spot project was discussed at last week’s meeting of the Chamber’s Community and Business Development Committee and will be reviewed again at the group’s Wednesday meeting.

The project is designed to enhance the community’s appearance without the need of municipal or community-wide fund-raising, she said.
