WASHINGTON – Santino Quaranta and Jamie Moreno scored and Nick Rimando earned his fifth shutout, helping D.C. United snap New England’s 11-game unbeaten streak with a 2-0 victory Saturday night.
Quaranta opened the scoring with a header in the 10th minute, his second goal of the season. He also assisted on Moreno’s team-leading sixth goal two minutes later.
The Revolution fell to 7-1-4, and one game shy of the MLS record for an unbeaten start to the season.
In the 10th minute, United midfielder Christian Gomez lofted a free kick toward the center of the goal box. Revolution goalie Matt Reis tried to intercept the pass, but the ball caromed off a group of players and bounced to Quaranta, who headed it over a Revolution defender.
Before the crowd of 17,611 was finished celebrating that goal, Moreno moved past two defenders with a crossover dribble and sent a low, right-footed shot past Reis.
Rimando had to make strong saves on shots by New England midfielder Steve Ralston with just over 10 minutes left in the game.
D.C. United was playing without Freddy Adu, who is playing for U.S. team at the World Youth Championships.
MetroStars 3, Crew 2
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Ante Razov scored two goals in a 1:47 span of the second half to help the MetroStars beat his former Columbus teammates 3-2 on Saturday night.
Razov, playing his second game for the MetroStars after joining the team in a June 7 trade that sent John Wolyniec to the Crew, scored his first goal in the 31st minute on a play set up by Youri Djorkaeff and Michael Bradley.
Razov made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute, beating goalkeeper Bill Gaudette off a feed from Amado Guevara. Razov increased his career goal total to 80, giving him sole possession of fifth place in MLS history.
Edson Buddle cut it to 2-1 in the 36th minute, Djorkaeff scored on a penalty kick in the 70th minute, and the Crew’s Cornell Glen completed the scoring in the 77th minute.
The MetroStars improved to 5-3-5.
, while the Crew dropped to 4-7-1.
A crowd of 11,666 fans attended the game at 80,242-seat Giants Stadium.
