NEW YORK – Even when Kevin Brown pitches well, he winds up with a loss. This time, he didn’t get much help from his New York teammates.
John Lackey combined with four relievers to shut down the all-or-nothing Yankees, and the Los Angeles Angels got RBI singles from Vladimir Guerrero and Darin Erstad in a 3-1 victory Thursday night.
The Angels took two of three at Yankee Stadium, assuring New York (9-13) of its first losing month since it was 11-17 in May 2003.
Tigers 3, Indians 2
CLEVELAND – Mike Maroth made just two bad pitches in six innings, holding Cleveland to four hits and leading the Detroit Tigers to their fourth straight win, 3-2 over the Indians on Thursday night.
Maroth (2-1) gave up solo homers to Casey Blake and Jhonny Peralta in the fifth inning, but the left-hander had few other issues with the majors’ worst hitting team. Maroth walked one and tied a career high with eight strikeouts.
Brewers 4, Cardinals 3
ST. LOUIS – Chris Capuano won for the first time since August, helping himself with a double at the plate as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 Thursday and avoided a three-game sweep.
Russell Branyan homered and Brady Clark had a two-run double for the Brewers, who won for only the third time in 13 games and defeated the Cardinals for the first time in six meetings this season. They also won for the first time this year when scoring fewer than six runs.

DENVER – Thursday’s doubleheader between the Florida Marlins and the Colorado Rockies was postponed due to rain and cold.
The doubleheader was scheduled when heavy snow began falling in the second inning Wednesday night and caused that game to be wiped out.
Blue Jays 7, Devil Rays 4
TORONTO – Gregg Zaun hit a three-run homer in a five-run sixth inning, and the Toronto Blue Jays completed a three-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays with a 7-4 victory on Thursday.
Tampa Bay tied a season-high with its four straight loss and dropped to 1-7 on the road. Toronto, which has won three straight following a five-game skid, outscored the Devil Rays 23-11 in the series and swept them at home for the first time since July 23-25 last year.
Twins 6, Royals 5
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Even after forcing extra innings, the Kansas City Royals couldn’t win. Lew Ford singled home the go-ahead run off Mike Wood in the 11th, lifting the Minnesota Twins over Kansas City 6-5 Thursday and completing the first 0-6 homestand in Royals’ history.
