KITZBUEHEL, Austria (AP) – Daron Rahlves was king of the mountain on a slope ordinarily ruled by Hermann Maier.

Rahlves won a World Cup super giant slalom Friday a day after coming in third in a downhill. The American finished ahead of two Austrians skiing in their home country.

Surging down the steep and treacherous run in 1 minute, 23.08 seconds, Rahlves became the first non-Austrian to win a super-G on the notorious Streif course. Maier won the last three years.

“It doesn’t matter who I beat, it just matters than I win,” Rahlves said. “It was a great victory for me.”

Rahlves edged Maier by 0.03 seconds on Hahnenkamm mountain, and Michael Walchhofer of Austria was third in 1:23.47. Rahlves’ teammate, Bode Miller, was 28th. Another U.S. skier, Bryon Friedman, was left with a concussion after a fall, and team officials said he will be sidelined for a week. He also bruised his shins and will miss this weekend’s downhill and slalom, which counts toward the combined event.

Rahlves has enjoyed great success in Kitzbuehel, and on Saturday will try to repeat last year’s victory.

in the downhill, considered the most prestigious on the World Cup circuit.

“Last year winning the downhill, I fulfilled my dream,” said Rahlves, the first American to win a World Cup downhill on this mountain. “Now I can say I won the super-G. I have two wins on the Hahnenkamm.”

Maier missed a fourth victory Friday by the barest of margins.

“This is my worst result ever – second place,” said Maier, only half joking. “I’ve won here three times, but I am happy with the result. I think I could have won but I made a big mistake.”

Last year, Maier enjoyed a sensational a comeback victory in the super-G on this course. It was his first win after an 18-month absence because of a motorcycle crash that nearly cost him a leg and his first super-G since the accident.

“For sure, I was thinking about this in the start,” Maier said. “It was such a great feeling for me last year and there were a lot of memories.”

Norway’s Lasse Kjus finished fifth and remained first in the overall standings with 740 points. Austria’s Benjamin Raich is second (698) and Maier is third (685).

Maier held the lead in the super-G standings with 320 points. Kjus is second (230) and Rahlves climbed to third (198).
