MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Senior quarterback Brennan Carney passed for 396 yards and Pat Moffett grabbed 282 yards through the air, both school records, as Wesleyan warded off Bates 23-20 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference football game Saturday.

Carney completed 21-of-43 passes. He hooked up with Moffett for a 38-yard touchdown in the second quarter to give the Cardinals (3-1) a 10-7 lead in the second quarter.

Later, Carney added a 1-yard sneak to put Wesleyan on top 23-13 with 4:48 to go in regulation. Bates stopped Wesleyan on third-and-goal from the 2 but was called for offsides on the play, giving the Cardinals a second shot at the end zone.

Chris Gwozdz added a quarterback sneak of his own, capping a 10-play drive after a 42-yard kick return by Rob Maguire, to pull the Bobcats (1-3) within three with 2:15 left.

Wesleyan recovered the ensuing onside kick, and Carney rushed for a first down that enabled the Cardinals to run the clock down to seven seconds.

Two desperation passes by Gwozdz fell incomplete.

Bates beat Williams 13-6 last Saturday to end a 15-game losing streak against the Ephs. Wesleyan extended its spell over Bates to 17 consecutive games. The Bobcats’ last win in the series came in 1982.

Although Wesleyan scored first on a 41-yard field goal by Vin Balsamo, Bates took a 7-3 lead on a 58-yard TD pass from Gwozdz (20-for-38, 221 yards) to freshman running back Ken Adams.

That was Adams’ lone reception. He topped the century mark rushing for the third straight game, picking up 124 yards on 29 carries. Another first-year runner, Jamie Walker, lugged the ball 11 times for 67 yards.

Matt Orlando caught eight passes for 61 yards, and Owen Miehe added six receptions for 54 yards. The teams combined for 830 yards of total offense.

Wesleyan took the lead for good on Moffett’s leaping grab along the left sideline. Freshman back Phil Banks added a 2-yard TD run late in the second quarter to make it 17-7 at the half.

Nat Carr kicked field goals of 20 and 38 yards in the third quarter to pull Bates within four.

BRUNSWICK – Brandon Holtslag passed for 177 yards and ran for 93 more as Hamilton hung on to defeat Bowdoin 21-20 and snap an 11-game losing streak.

Hamilton (1-3) took the lead for good on Holtslag’s 1-yard run midway through the third quarter. He scored on a 10-yard run in the second quarter.

Bowdoin (0-4) was led by Rob Patchett, who rushed for 156 yards on 34 carries and scored a 4-yard touchdown. Tom Duffy passed for 135 yards, but was intercepted four times, including three times in the fourth quarter.
