Phillies 6, Brewers 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Vicente Padilla pitched seven shutout innings for his first win in more than three months, and the Philadelphia Phillies sent Milwaukee to its ninth straight loss by beating the Brewers 6-1 Friday night.

The Phillies snapped a seven-game home losing streak. They scored all their runs with two outs in the fifth inning, keyed by two-run singles from Bobby Abreu and David Bell.

Rheal Cormier pitched a hitless eighth but Todd Jones gave up Geoff Jenkins’ 20th homer in the ninth, spoiling the shutout bid.

Philadelphia returned to Citizens Bank Park for the first time since a franchise-worst 1-9 homestand Aug. 9-19 against Colorado, San Francisco and Atlanta.

Padilla (5-6) bounced back from one of his worst starts of the season, when he allowed six runs and seven hits in five innings against the Brewers on Aug. 21.

This time, the right-hander held Milwaukee to five hits. He walked one and struck five.

Padilla, who was on the disabled list from May 30 to Aug. 9 with right triceps tendinitis, hadn’t won since beating San Diego on May 23.

Milwaukee had a chance to score in the fourth, but Padilla escaped a bases-loaded jam when he got Trent Durrington to line out to right.

Philadelphia broke the game open in the fifth, scoring six two-out runs off Victor Santos (10-9).

Marlon Byrd might have made the key play when he hustled to beat out a potential double play.

With two outs, Padilla and Jimmy Rollins drew back-to-back walks to load the bases.

Jason Michaels followed with a liner off the mound and the ball appeared to be slowed down. It was fielded by second baseman Durrington, who flipped to shortstop Craig Counsell. The play was slow to develop and Rollins slid and clearly beat Counsell’s force at the base.

Abreu followed with a two-run single to left for a 3-0 lead. After an intentional walk to Jim Thome, Bell singled home two more runs, chasing Santos.

Jeff Bennett relieved and hit Placido Polanco with a pitch to load the bases again and walked Mike Lieberthal to force in the sixth run.

Santos started strong, retiring his first 10 batters, but he lost for the sixth time in his last seven decisions. He allowed six runs, five hits and four walks.

Notes: Thome celebrated his 34th birthday. … Abreu got his 32nd stolen base in 35 attempts. … Bell has 43 of his 61 RBIs at home this season. … Ben Grieve had two hits and is 4-for-6 lifetime against Padilla. … Milwaukee’s Pedro Liriano made his major league debut in the seventh, working a scoreless inning.
