ELLSWORTH – The Maine Federation of Women’s Clubs Art Department Chairwoman Barbara Hathaway of Wilton presided over the federation’s annual high school student art show and club women’s photography contest held during the spring convention at the Holiday Inn.

Merna Dunham of Milo and Gail Pooler of Skowhegan, president of the GFWC/Dove Society, assisted.

Each of the five districts could bring four pieces to the annual student art show. Computer art was allowed this year and there was one entry.

First-place winner was Nick Reese, senior at Ellsworth High School, sponsored by Acadian Community Woman’s Club; second, Cody Howe, junior at Penquis Valley HS, sponsored by GFWC/Miosac and GFWC Cosmopolitan Clubs; third, Catherine Strauch, junior at Dexter HS, sponsored by Dexter Woman’s Literary Club.

Honorable mention went to Joann Cundiff, senior at Maranacook High School, Readfield, sponsored by the Livermore Falls Women’s Club.

First-place photography winner in “The World of Pictures, Nature History” was Nina Speed, Dexter Women’s Literary Club. Joyce Noonan, GFWC/Skowhegan Woman’s Club, won first, scenic; and first, feature, went to Barbara Auston, GFWC/Miosac Club of Dover-Foxcroft. Winning photo in GFWC Volunteers in Action went to Wilma Billie Sherman, president of GFWC/Skowhegan Women’s Club.

Poetry contest winner was Wilma Billie Sherman of Canaan, member of the GFWC/Skowhegan WC. Short story winner was Claire Tanner, member of GFWC/Livermore Falls. The winning poem and short story were sent to the General Federation of Women’s Clubs for a chance to win at that level.

The federation is a nonprofit, volunteer organization dedicated to community improvement. New members are welcome.
