LEWISTON – The U.S.S. Canberra Association, in conjunction with area veterans organizations, will conduct special services in recognition of Armed Forces Day at noon Saturday, May 16, in Veterans Memorial Park.

In 1950, the president of the United States proclaimed the third Saturday in May as Armed Forces Day, which marks the unification of the military services and the creation of the Department of Defense as provided for the National Security Act of 1947.

Armed Forces Day is intended to symbolize unification and demonstrate the close working relationship of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and the Reserves.

The program will open with the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of the “Star-Spangled Banner” by the assembly.

The Rev. Steven Crowson, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church, will give the invocation followed by introduction of members of the recruiting offices in the Lewiston-Auburn area.

Jerry DerBoghosian will read a proclamation on Armed Forces Day. Guest speakers from the Maine Legislature, Lewiston Mayor Larry Gilbert and Auburn Mayor John Jenkins will make remarks.

Douglas Taylor, Jesus Party, will give the benediction followed by singing of “God Bless America” by the assembly

The services, held rain or shine, are open to the public. For more information, contact DerBoghosian at 353-7435 or 782-5700 or Paul Bernard of L-A Veterans Council at 225-3285.
