LEWISTON – The Senior College “Food for Thought” luncheon program series at USM/Lewiston-Auburn on Friday, Jan. 9, will feature a presentation by Charles Plummer on the advance of the last ice-age glacier into Maine, and how it affected the Atlantic ocean and shaped the landscape around Auburn, Lewiston, Lisbon, Durham and Pownal.
Plummer’s talk will describe the Laurentide Ice Sheet, which was more than a mile thick, as it gradually covered New England. When the glacier began to recede about 18,000 years ago, its melting deposited boulders and stones along with clay, sand and gravel throughout the area, raising the landscape from the ocean.
Plummer will use original diagrams and photographs as he takes attendees on a visual tour of that period of time in Maine’s history.
Plummer is a board member and frequent instructor at L-A Senior College and is also Maine studies teacher for the Auburn Adult Education program.
The program will be held at noon in the Function Room 170 at USM/L-A. The cost, which includes lunch, is $7 with advance reservation or $8 at the door, opening at 11:30 a.m.
Reservations must be made no later than noon Thursday, Jan. 8, by phone at 753-6510 or online at usm.maine.edu/lac/seniorcollege. Any late callers will be considered as “at the door.”
