LEWISTON – The L & A Veterans Council is sponsoring a Flag Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at Veterans Memorial Park.

Past Chairman Bertrand A. Dutil will lead the Pledge of Allegiance and Chairman Paul R. Bernard will officiate.

Invocation will be given by Gary K. Brooks, Military Order of the Purple Heart. Americanism Officer Richard G. Doucette, American Legion Post 153, will properly dispose of the flags. Willie R. Danforth Jr., Franco American War Veterans Post 31, will serve as sergeant-at-arms. Maurice E. Marquis, Marine Corps League, will sing “God Bless America.”

All unserviceable worn and tattered U.S. flags will be properly disposed of during the ceremony. The public is invited. Church youth groups and Scouts are welcome.

All commanders or appointed designated officers are asked to bring their collected unserviceable flags to the ceremony. Unserviceable US flags are collected year round by veterans organizations.

Flag Day, celebrated on June 14, commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which took place that day by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.
