LEWISTON – Museum L-A will sponsor a six-week experience that brings the ancient art of rejuvenation into the historic setting of its Portraits and Voices gallery in the Bates Mill.

“Tai-Chi-Chuan: An Ancient Art of Rejuvenation for Modern Times” with John Jenkins is set to begin early next month at Museum L-A in the Bates Mill Complex. The hour-long Tuesday sessions begin at 5:30 and will run for six weeks from Feb. 5 through March 11.

“The core of Museum L-A’s vision is to be a gathering place for the community, to share and facilitate its valued resources of history, knowledge and programs as well as be an active participant in the community,” said Rachel Desgrosseilliers, executive director of Museum L-A.

“As millworkers wove threads for their lives, tai chi weaves threads of life and wellness,” Jenkins said. For more than a thousand years, this ancient art of wellness has provided benefits such as decreased blood pressure, increased flexibility, improved balance and effective self-defense.

It is easy to do and does not require any preparation. “It’s a great counterbalance to lifestyles of stress,” Jenkins added. “Wellness is of extreme importance to our citizens and through presentation of the ancient art of tai chi in the peaceful surroundings that our Portraits and Voices exhibit offers, Museum L-A will be contributing to the betterment of our community,” Desgrosseilliers said. “We look forward to having it not just be exercise but, with John Jenkins, it will be a fun, learning experience, as well as a rejuvenation of the body.”

Registration fee is $30 and participants are asked to bring comfortable clothing and flat shoes. Minimum class size is 10 participants. For more information, contact Museum L-A at 333-3881.
