Park concert
OXFORD – Anderson-Staples American Legion Post 112 will present a Concert in the Park at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 3, at Oxford Veterans’ Memorial Park, Route 121. Book sale
WATERFORD – The Waterford Library will hold its annual book sale from 8 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, July 4, in conjunction with the Waterford Independence Day celebrations. A variety of hard covers and paperbacks will be offered at bargain prices. The library will be open during the sale. The library is located in Waterford Flat on Route 35/37.
Parade
OTISFIELD – One of the biggest Fourth of July parades in the Oxford Hills will begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 4, leading off at Spurr’s Corner Fire Station. The theme for this year’s parade is “Show Your Colors.” People are invited to enter a float, an antique vehicle, fire truck or decorated bike or stroller, or just walk in the parade to show your colors. Set up for the parade begins at 9 a.m. just south of the fire station on Route 121.
Following the parade will be a red, white and blue salute by the fire department, music, a watermelon-spitting contest, face painting, pie contest, free popsicles, popcorn and bottled water. Enter a pie in the pie contest. Pies should be baked in disposable tins, labeled with the type of pie, a name and phone number. Pies will be sold for $5 apiece after the winners are announced. Blood drive
OXFORD – An Oxford Hills community blood drive will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday, July 5, at the American Legion Post 112, Route 121, King Street. A valid ID is required. Contact the American Red Cross at 1-800-448-3543 extension 3 for an appointment. All presenting donors can enter to win two tickets to a Boston Red Sox, home game. Unit 82 meeting
NORWAY – Stone-Smart American Legion Auxiliary Unit 82 held the June meeting with 1st Vice President Jean Millett presiding. Membership Chairman Maryj Sessions reported that there is now 100 members. Barbara Henley went to the Guy E Rowe School on June 14 to present flags and flag booklets to the second graders.
Members voted to run kitchen for a special bingo with all profits going to American Legion Legacy Fund Scholarship for children who have lost a parent in Iraq. The Auxiliary yard sale will be held Saturday, June 30, at Great Scott Storage.
Legion picnic will be at the home of Ernest and Joyce Clifford on Sunday, July 15. Members voted to make donations to the Western Maine Veterans Home, Norway Firemen’s Relief and the USO.
The meeting was preceded by an old-fashioned picnic supper co-chaired by Rose Moulton and Joyce Clifford. To observe Flag Day a poem was read by National Guard member Andrew Dean and everyone sang God Bless America. Delegates to the annual convention were Kim Hansen, Marilyn Jones, Lucille Allen and Joyce Clifford. Alternates were Joyce Bickford and Marjy Sessions. Ruth Jucius was delegate-at-large.
The unit received the following awards: Deanna Merchant, First place for her scrapbook; Barbara Henley, a certificate for unit history and scrapbook; Barbara Henley, a plaque for Americanish report; Deanna Merchant was chosen as junior member of the year. Joyce Clifford received an award for her poem about veterans, and received the Silver Ruler Award for Education and second place award for poppy display.
New clergy
PARIS – Trinity Lutheran Church, 34 Buckfield Road will welcome new clergy couple, Tom Myhre, his wife, Kim Marie and their three children, Esme, Simone and Bjorn, on Sunday, July 1. Service will begin at 9 a.m. followed by refreshments and good fellowship.
July 4 postponed
NORWAY – The Norway Business Association has announced, due to scheduling conflicts with some participants, the Pop Goes the Fourth events planned for this Saturday have been postponed until July 21. All events, including the parade, children’s activity center, auction and street dance, will take place on July 21, with most events being held in the Beal’s Tavern parking lot.

Society sale
PARIS – The Paris Cape Historical Society will hold a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 7, at the Society museum, 77 High St.
Someone will be at the museum on Thursdays, July 5 and 12, and again on Friday, July 13, in the afternoon, to receive donations. No clothes or large electronic items, such as computers or appliances, please.
