This fall, Lewiston High School’s Drama Club presented a performance, entitled, Flowers For Algernon. The Drama Club put on three shows, November 29, 30 and December 1.
The three shows went very well. The story is about a teacher named Alice Kinnian, (Brittany Martin) who is trying to tutor Charlie Gordon (Christopher Hodgkin) who has a mental disorder. Professor Nemur, (Renald LeFrebvre) a scientist, comes up with a procedure to help people with special needs. He initially practices the procedure on mice. In this case, he administers the procedure to a mouse named Algernon, who subsequently becomes exceptionally intelligent.
Later on, Professor Nemur decides to practice the operation on a human, Charlie Gordon, because he thinks the operation will be successful. Dr. Strauss (Andrew Jackson) and Burt Gordon (Nate Chaloux), are assistants to Professor Nemur with this procedure. After his operation, Charlie establishes a special relationship with the mouse Algernon. Throughout the play, Charlie becomes more intelligent, and falls in love with Alice. Soon, Charlie’s intelligence surpasses everyone else’s and he realizes that there was a mistake with the operation. There was a miscalculation and the effects of the operation begin to reverse themselves and Charlie slowly regresses back to his old self. With this realization, Charlie decides to leave with Algernon in search of his mother (Rebecca Spilecki), Father (Ryan Dubois), and sister (Amber Thibault), before it is too late.
The performance was exceptionally well done. There were a few technical mishaps, but all in all, a well done show. Good job Lewiston High School’s Drama Club!
