LEWISTON – Whether used as a comfort during labor or a medium for birthing, water can play an integral role in the birthing process. An informative discussion at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center can help expecting families explore the option.
“Water and Birth: The Gentle Option” will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, in the Fleet Room at the St. Mary’s Women’s Health Pavilion.
The use of birthing tubs during labor provide benefits to mother and child: increased relaxation for the mother; women in the buoyancy of heated water experience improved support for tense muscles, decreasing pain.
Also, enhanced oxygen flow to the mother; less need for medical intervention; water can speed up a slowly progressing labor; less instrumentation usage; less anxiety for the mother; serves as natural pain management.
The evening will be facilitated by a group of midwives from Women’s Health Associates, a Community Clinical Services practice. Midwives Jean Dowling, CNM, Chris Gillis, CNM, Jean Kahn, CNM, and Barbara Smith-Foy, CNM, will present the topic. The program will include an informal videotape, discussion by the midwives and an opportunity for audience questions.
