On November 24, 2002, baby Girl Poynter was born in Colorado. Her father had passed away, and her mother was unable to care for her. The Piirainens got a call from Bird Dog, the child’s grandfather. He asked them to adopt this beautiful baby. They quickly said yes, for the child’s father was their nephew!
After three years of court meetings, and spending a lot of money, her adoption party was about to arrive! It was scheduled for Sept. 17, in the Elm Street School gym. Friends and family were all invited. The Piirainens told everyone they knew. This child was a community effort.
“To my knowledge, this is the first adoption party held out of the court room,” said the Judge as he signed the adoption papers in front of the more than 100 people who were there. They had also changed her name from Girl Poynter, to Pamela: Pamela Marie Poynter Piirainen.
Bird Dog couldn’t make it, so he sent a letter to be read. People listened with tears in their eyes as the letter was read. It was an amazingly happy day for the small town of Mechanic Falls!
Congratulations Piirainen family! The community is proud of you, and your new baby, Pam!
