Summary – This movie is set in England during the Napoleonic War. Rebecca (Becky) Sharp is an English governess sent to a family to help a family’s children with their studies. Being the daughter of a starving artist and an opera singer, she never really had that much social status. While she is helping the children, her journey as a social climber (or should I say mountaineer) begins.
Her spot on the ladder becomes higher and higher when she falls in love and marries Rawden Crawley, a British soldier. This is where some tension between her and her best friend Amelia Sealey starts. Her husband, George, who is also a soldier gets jealous of Rowden and Becky when they are welcomed into high society, and blames Amelia.
Reflections – I advise two kinds of people to see this movie. If one is a romantic, one will enjoy the “romance novel” type appeal. If one is a history buff, one will enjoy all the battles and language. Overall, it was quite good.
I give it an A-.
