AUGUSTA – A number of special workshops will be offered during the fall semester through the University of Maine at Augusta.

Don Osier, director of learning support services, said a variety of workshops will be offered to students and community members on topics such as effective learning and memory, time management, studying math and reducing the stress of taking tests.

“Effective Learning and Memory” will review how learning occurs and how to be a more effective learner. Specific techniques to improve memory, reduce the effort of learning and increase the enjoyment of the learning process will be covered.

The workshop will be offered from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Augusta campus; from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Sept. 17, at UMA at Lewiston Auburn College; from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Sept. 18, at UMA’s University College of Bangor campus; from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, Sept. 19, and 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at the Augusta campus.

“How to Study Math” is designed to help with the development of math skills and understanding, how to study effectively and how to get the most out of math courses. Participants will also learn strategies to help reduce math anxiety, help improve math study skills and improve math testing performance.

Sessions will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, and 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, on the Augusta campus.

“Solving Math Word Problems” will help participants to overcome the leading cause of stress and anxiety among math students. It is intended for math students at all levels and will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, Sept. 8, and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the Augusta campus.

“So Much to Do, So Little Time” is designed to help participants examine where time goes. Specific strategies will be explained to plan an activity, use time effectively and reduce the stress of busy lives. The workshop will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, and 4 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the Augusta campus; and from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at UMA’s Bangor campus.

“Reducing the Stress of Taking Tests” will be scheduled from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, abd 4 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the Augusta campus; from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at the Bangor campus; and 1:30 to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at the Augusta campus.
