AUBURN – The Maine Technical College System board of trustees has selected Brian N. Hamel to serve as board chairman for the upcoming year. Hamel is president and CEO of Loring Development Authority in Limestone. Joanna Jones was chosen to serve as vice chairwoman.

Hamel has overseen the development of the Loring Commerce Centre since 1994. Under his leadership, the centre has become a business park and represents a model in military base closure development.

Hamel has been honored as Developer of the Year by the National Association of Installation Developers in Washington, D.C., the Maine Champion for Economic Growth by the Maine Development Foundation and as the Citizen of the Year by the Presque Isle Chamber of Commerce. He has been a member of the MTCS board since 1998.

Jones was also appointed to the board in 1998 and is serving her second four-year term. She is director of human resources at Educational Development Corp. and is a resident of Waldoboro.

The board officially voted to adopt the Maine Community College System name effective July 1. The board also endorsed a number of new programs at the colleges, including Central Maine Technical College: Certificate, AS and AAS in education.
