PARIS – The weather doesn’t always make it easy, but the Hillsmen Barbershop Chorus continued its tradition Tuesday of delivering singing valentines.

Decked out in bright blue blazers and red ties, the quintet was especially busy during the morning. Stopping at businesses and homes, the chorus sang “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” “Heart of My Heart” and “Sweet and Lovely.” After a distribution of candy and flowers and a quick photograph with the recipients, they were off to the next call.

Tere Porter of Paris, who sings lead, said Wednesday that he told the other members Valentine’s Day would also be Clint Eastwood Day.

“We’re going to make their day for them,” he said, referring to a line from Eastwood’s role in the movie “Dirty Harry.”

The Hillsmen have been around for more than 30 years and performed at a variety of events around Oxford County, including the Norway Arts Festival, Founder’s Day in Paris and Fryeburg Fair.

Pat Fleck, the chorus director, said there are 13 people in the group, some of whom had to work Thursday.

Thursday’s morning group included Porter, who sang lead; Arnold Jordan of Greenwood, bass; Dmitri Diggs of West Paris, tenor; Bill Herlihy of Newry and Tim Stewart of Minot, both baritone.

The schedule of Valentine’s Day recipients included Androscoggin Bank, Maurice’s Restaurant, River Restaurant, and Maine Veterans Home, all in Paris, and Norway Savings Bank and Norway Rehabilitation and Living Center. The group also sang a happy birthday to Darci Hamm, senior vice president of retail at Norway Savings Bank, and paid a visit to Bonita Bridges of Paris.

“I can’t describe it,” a surprised Bridges said after receiving her valentine. “I was flabbergasted.”

“We have some new people here, so it was kind of interesting for them,” said Patty Cornell, branch manager of the Androscoggin Bank. “I think the customers that were here enjoyed them, too.”

Porter said the Valentine’s Day songs benefit everyone involved.

“It creates goodwill at their work. It creates goodwill for the Hillsmen. And it’s also a fundraiser for us,” he said.

Fleck said the group performs free of charge for benefits and nursing homes. Fundraisers such as the singing valentines help them raise money for the music, learning CDs and other costs.

Stewart said nursing homes are his favorite venues to sing.

“The people that come to listen to us there just light up when we sing for them,” he said. “And they know all our songs and sing along with us.”

Diggs said he does not have a favorite place to perform, but said that he also enjoys audience participation.

“I just kind of like seeing people when they start singing along with the music,” he said.

Porter said the Hillsmen were down to the bare minimum of four members just three years ago but have been rebuilding since.

Jordan said he hopes the group will continue to expand so they can send out more singers on Valentine’s Day.

“With just one group, you’re kind of limited to what you can take on,” Jordan said.

The Hillsmen singing Thursday morning ranged in age from 22 to 73. The Hillsmen sometimes perform with the Mollyockett Chorus of Sweet Adelienes International, a women’s barbershop chorus, which Fleck also directs.

“I’m hoping maybe next year that this will be a joint venture,” she said of the singing valentines.

The Hillsmen meet from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Mondays at St. Catherine’s of Sienna on Main Street in Norway. The Mollyockett Chorus meets at the same time on Tuesdays at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Skeetfield Road in Oxford. Singers are welcome.
