FRYEBURG – Three records and a pair of ties for two of the five championships marked the 38th annual Saco Valley Woodmen’s Day at Fryeburg Fair.
Sven Johnson and Charlie Wojtkun of Connecticut set a new record in the masters’ crosscut, while Nancy Zalewski of Plymouth, Wis., and Mary Beth Dooley of Waterport, N.Y., established a new mark in the women’s crosscut. John Wescott of Porter set the new record in the grapple skidder contest.
Wojtkun and Ohio’s Rudy Dettmer shared masters’ champion honors, while Steve Verrill and Brian Winn of South Effington, N.H., were tied for champion trucker.
“We have four different ways to break ties and none of them worked,” said Toby Hammond, co-chairman of the event with his father, Wilbur. “We have never had anything like this happen. They matched up point for point in every category.”
Woodsmen’s Day attracted more than 90 competitors in field events and 31 in the trucking and skidding competitions. There were 21 competitors in both the masters’ and women’s events.
Don Lambert of St. Gilles, Quebec, won the Champion Woodsman Award, John Wescott of Porter won Champion Logger, and Nancy Zalewski was named Women’s Champion.
Wojtkun and Johnson won the new masters’ crosscut event last year. Wojtkun first competed here in 1974.
