NORWAY – Maine residents can now help control the pet population while filling out their tax forms. By checking off a box on their state tax forms, citizens concerned about growing numbers of cats and dogs can donate part of their tax refund to the Companion Animal Sterilization Fund.

Responsible Pet Care of Norway is encouraging people to participate in the program. Taxpayers can choose to donate $5, $10 or $25 to the fund, which will help to spay and neuter cats at Responsible Pet Care. The fund also benefits the Maine Department of Agriculture’s “Help Fix ME” program, which provides pet sterilization at low cost to low-income families.

Responsible Pet Care staff member Jean White said the shelter currently houses 80 cats.

The staff of five cares for the animals with no federal help, although they have received some money through state grants. White said the majority of the shelter’s funds come from fund-raising activities.

“The rest just comes from citizens who care enough to help animals,” she said.
