WATERFORD – Tonight, the town will hold the last of two public hearings on a land use ordinance voters will be asked to approve in March.

The ordinance is intended to help control growth and related pressures on municipal services and the environment. Selectman Chairman Charles Fillebrown Jr. has said the ordinance would help “protect” the town.

If approved by voters, the ordinance would create four distinct districts and an aquifer overlay zone. The latter would provide special protections for sand and gravel aquifers across town, while the districts would provide specific growth- and development-related standards for areas of town.

The proposed districts are a general development district, historic village architectural district, village district and rural district.

Different lot size, street frontage and setback requirements apply to some of the districts. Some property uses are prohibited in some or all of the districts. Some uses, such as duplexes, accessory apartments or convenience stores, would require code enforcement officer or Planning Board approval.

Tonight’s public hearing will be held at 7 at the town office.

The land management standards ordinance would go into effect Jan. 1, 2006 if town meeting voters give it the nod.
