WATERFORD – Maine State Police are looking for a man who impersonated a police officer while stopping a woman on Route 118 late Monday.
The woman was driving south on Route 118 near the Crooked River Store after 11:30 p.m. when she was followed by a blue or black Chevy Caprice-style car, Trooper Andre Paradis said Tuesday.
The driver of the second car placed a red light on his roof and signaled for the woman to pull over.
The man approached the woman’s car carrying a flashlight, as an officer would, Paradis said. He then asked the young woman to get out of her car.
“She questioned that because it just didn’t seem logical,” Paradis said.
Instead of getting out of the car, the woman asked the “officer” for his identification. That’s when the man returned to his car and drove off, Paradis said.
“He didn’t have a uniform on, (and) he had a little red light, not a blue one like a police officer had,” Paradis noted.
Police have released a composite sketch of a man and an image of a Caprice.
The incident is similar to one that occurred in Bridgton on July 20, when a man stopped a 17-year-old girl after following her from the Big Apple Store in Naples.
According to reports from the Bridgton Police Department, that man was driving a mid-1990s blue Chevrolet Caprice and activated a red and blue dash light when he stopped the girl at 11:30 p.m.
“It was very similar,” Paradis said Tuesday. He said no one was arrested in that incident.
Although there are no strong leads in Monday’s case, Paradis said state police have “a lot of ideas and definitely we will be treating this very seriously.”
Officers in unmarked cars typically wear full uniforms while on patrol, Paradis said, and police lights are always blue.
Anyone who is suspicious of an officer should ask for identification, he suggested.
If someone is still suspicious, he or she can keep their doors locked, not roll the windows down all the way, and call 911 to check an officer’s identification if they have a cell phone, he added.
