CANTON – A 50-year-old Jay woman escaped injury Tuesday afternoon when her vehicle rolled over during a snowstorm.

Maine State Trooper Kyle Tilsley said Shannon Staples was driving her 2001 Saturn sports utility vehicle south on Route 140 near Lake Anasagunticook when she came up behind another vehicle.

When she hit the brakes to slow, she lost control of the vehicle, causing her SUV to hit an embankment and roll over. She hung from a seat belt until assistant fire Chief Mark Blanchette was able to get her unhooked and removed from the vehicle.

Staples suffered no injuries, but her SUV was destroyed, Tilsley said.

Med-Care Ambulance Service and the Canton Fire Department responded to the accident.

That mid-afternoon accident was one of several Tilsley responded to during the season’s first snow and sleet storm.

He said two others occurred in Rumford Center, and several more in Canton near the Jay line and along Route 108.
