DIXFIELD – Mexico Water District trustees unanimously agreed to extend its operation of the Dixfield Water Department until the end of June .

Anne Young, water district administrator, said on Thursday that trustees will then re-evaluate the cooperative effort between the two towns.

Selectmen advertised for a new water or water/sewer operator and received nine applications. Whether they will choose one of the applicants or renegotiate with neighboring Mexico for continued operation of Dixfield’s water department will not be known until Monday.

Although the applications for the water or water/sewer operator position closed on March 2, no one has been interviewed by the hiring committee or by the Water Advisory Board.

Dixfield/Mexico Town Manager John Madigan said Dixfield’s board meets on Monday and will discuss the options.

The Mexico Water District has been operating the Dixfield Water Department for nearly a year.

The agreement expired on March 2, but Mexico chose to continue until Dixfield decided what steps to take next.

Prior to the two-town agreement, Dixfield employed a water operator and the public works department operated the sewer department, a task that public works continues. However, many town officials believe sewer department responsibilities are taking time away from necessary public works projects.

Selectmen, who also serve as water and sewer trustees, meet at 5 p.m. Monday in Ludden Memorial Library.
