ROXBURY – Townspeople elected a new selectman at Monday’s annual town meeting.

Debbie DeRoche, 49, an employee at NewPage Corp., made a first-time run for elective office. As it turned out, she ran unopposed because Selectman Douten Thomas rescinded his candidacy at the town meeting, Selectman Mark Touchette said.

DeRoche joins Touchette and Selectman Alan Hodgkins on the board.

Re-elected town clerk and treasurer was Tina Howard, 49, to another year. She was challenged by Renee Hodsdon who with her husband, Roy, moved here from Rumford last May.

For yet another year, no one ran for the town’s seat on the SAD 43 board. That seat has been vacant for several years. Touchette, the last Roxbury resident to hold the position, had to resign when he was elected selectman.

Other highlights of the meeting include a rejection by a majority of the nearly 100 residents who attended the meeting of spending $60,000 to complete the new town office and fire house.

Touchette said a special town meeting to ask approval to borrow the money through bonding will likely be held in June. Townspeople also approved $15,350 for the Roxbury Fire Department.
