CANTON – By a vote of 81-12, voters Tuesday chose to close the Canton Elementary School.

Canton students are attending Peru Elementary School until a new school for both towns is built, Superintendent Tom Ward said. A new school is expected to be built around 2008, he said.

And voters also decided, 63-30, to buy the Veterans of Foreign Wars building on Staples Hill Road. The building will be renovated to house the town office and the town archives, which will be out of the Androscoggin River flood zone. The present office is in the flood zone.
