RUMFORD – More than a dozen vintage four-cylinder Plymouths will make Rumford their home for three days starting Sept. 16.

The Plymouth Owners Club, a nationwide group of people who love and drive 1928-1932 Plymouths, will hold its annual get-together at the Madison Motel on Route 2.

Harry Burns of Rumford, owner of a 1928 blue Plymouth sedan with black fenders, invited the organization to hold its annual tour in the River Valley area this year. Last year, the club made its home base in Massachusetts.

Over the years, Burns and his wife, Fran, have driven their antique auto to several vintage Plymouth gatherings in Ontario, western Pennsylvania, Woodstock, N.Y., and other places, and with the rest of the group, toured such local points of interest as Niagara Falls and the shores of Lake Huron.

Vintage auto owners from Ohio, Vermont, New Jersey, New York and Ontario are expected to participate, some driving coupes, with or without rumble seats, and sedans.

The group will arrive on Thursday. From the Madison, they will make day trips, in caravan formation, to Bob Bahre’s auto collection in Paris, Perham’s Of West Paris gem and jewelry store in West Paris, and the Logger’s Museum in Rangeley.

“Model A’s are common, but these aren’t. They are just good cars,” Burns said.

Owners of most of the visiting cars will have their vehicles hauled by trailer to the River Valley area, then embark on their tour. The cars’ top speed is 45 mph, Burns said.

A member of the club for six years, Burns said owning one of these pieces of automotive history is just plain fun.

“We meet a lot of people,” he said.

Those who wish to view the cars can see them at the Madison before 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, or mid-evening on Friday and Saturday. And of course, on the local roads, including a trip to the information parking center lot. For more information, Burns may be contacted at 364-7683.
