FARMINGTON – Literacy Volunteers is holding a Scrabble fund-raiser from 1 to 3:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, in Ricker Hall Addition, Rooms 202 and 205, at the University of Maine at Farmington.

Registration begins at 12:15 p.m. The event is open to all. It will include prizes and refreshments. All proceeds benefit Literacy Volunteers of Franklin and Somerset counties.

Preregistration will be $6 for general admission or $5 for students and seniors; the cost at the door is $7, or $6 for students and seniors.

To preregister, people may call Literacy Volunteers at 778-3460, or mail the registration to Literacy Volunteers, 108 Fairbanks Road, Farmington, ME 04938.

Last year, Literacy Volunteers worked with more than 100 students in Franklin County. All the tutors are volunteers, but the program needs help to sustain its ongoing efforts and cover expenses for part-time staff, books, dictionaries, workbooks and supplies for students, according to a spokesman.

On April 2, Literacy Volunteers will hold another Scrabble fund-raiser at the same time and location.
