JAY – The Jay Recycling Facility and Transfer Station will be closed Monday, May 26, in observance of Memorial Day. Monday’s trash collection will be held Tuesday, May 27. Monday’s recyclable collection will be held the following Monday.

Hydrant flushing

WILTON – The Wilton Water Department is flushing fire hydrants over the next couple of weeks, said Peter Nielsen, town manager. The activity may produce brief periods of discoloration in the water, he said.

Wilton seniors

WILTON – The Wilton Senior Citizens will not meet on May 28. The next meeting will be 1 p.m. June 4 at SeniorsPlus. At this meeting, the group will honor members who have died since Memorial Day 2002. The gathering on May 21 was in conjunction with a seminar presented by SeniorsPlus Community Center, “Taking Care of Others/Taking Care of Yourself.” Bill Willard from Legal Services for the Elderly; pharmacist Steve Maki from Hannaford; Laurie Winsor from Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice; Pam Averill, an Alzheimer’s coordinator, and Donna Courchesney, a family caregiver specialist from SeniorsPlus, were the presenters.

Handbell concert

FARMINGTON – The Ringers and Singers Handbell Choir from First United Methodist Church of Lakeland, Fla., will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 29, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Route 2. The choir of 23 young people and adults rings two six-octave sets of English handbells. This gives them more than 140 bells. The bells were cast and tuned at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London and range from one that weighs almost 20 pounds to one that weighs a few ounces. The group also plays a five-octave set of Malmark choir chimes. Since forming in 1976, the choir has traveled extensively. Its tours have included England, Germany, Scotland, the Netherlands, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and other parts of Europe, as well as the United States and Canada.

All are welcome. A freewill offering will be taken.

Dance shows

FARMINGTON – The Dance Workshop will present its annual dance performances at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 31, and 1 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at Mount Blue High School. Ballet students will dance an original dance, “Ballet Concerto,” choreographed to trumpet concertos by Haydn, Hertel and Mozart. The younger students will dance a folk suite ballet. There also will be a lively and varied variety show of jazz and tap numbers with a little jazz, country, Latin and rock. Tickets will be on sale at the door for $4.50. The performances are sponsored by the Mount Blue Music Boosters.

Auxiliary sale

PHILLIPS – The American Legion Auxiliary will sponsor a free sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 31, across from the Legion Hall on Depot Street. Items are free, but people may leave a donation for the veterans if they wish.

NEW VINEYARD – The Open Bible Baptist Church will hold its 18th annual ladies seminar June 6 and 7 at the church on Barker Road. The theme this year, “For What Is Your Life?”, is taken from the book of James 4:14. Ages 11 and up are invited to attend for a time of Bible study and fellowship, according to the church. The seminar will begin with prayer at 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 6, and then resume with a breakfast from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Saturday, June 7. Bible study will begin at 9 a.m. All are welcome. Cheering tryouts

FARMINGTON – Emblem Club 460 will sponsor the Mount Blue Middle School football cheering tryouts on June 17. A practice will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. June 12 at Academy Hill School in Wilton and another practice will be 5 to 7 p.m. June 16 at Mount Blue Middle School. The tryouts will be 5 to 7 p.m. June 17 at Academy Hill School. Participants are reminded to wear gym clothes and sneakers.
