AUBURN – City and school officials will continue reviewing their budgets Tuesday night, meeting with state education officials.

Tuesday’s meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., and City Manager Glenn Aho asked councilors to come prepared with questions, suggestions and possible cuts. He plans to begin an in-depth budget review with councilors after the school meeting ends.

Aho and School Superintendent Tom Morrill updated city councilors on budget work so far Monday night, just before a public hearing.

School teachers and supporters packed the room, but only one chose to speak. Lana Cassidy, of 94 Amberly Way praised school officials for working hard on the budget and trying to preserve smaller classroom sizes.

The School Committee is scheduled to finish its work by April 15. The City Council is due to approve a school budget 12 days later and send it to a citywide referendum on May 5.

Morrill said his proposed 2009-10 budget calls for $9,300 less spending than the current budget.

“What we’ve tried to do is keep an eye towards what is very best for the student, while keeping a close watch on spending,” Morrill said.

Aho said his proposed budget currently reduces the tax rate by about 12 cents for each $1,000 of property value.

“The good news is, we’re not finished yet,” Aho said. “I’m confident we still have places we can reduce.”
