On Thursday we were at the East Auburn Community School covering the Educator of the Day. In the third grade one student was having a birthday. As classmates gathered round to sing to him, teacher Kim Joler asked: “Do you want the classic birthday song or the military birthday song?”

“The military song,” answered Ben Feldman. Ben is an Army fan.

Joler asked a student to lead off. Ryan Allen volunteered. Singing in Army cadence style, he started as students marched in the same spot, repeating the cadence:

“I don’t know what I’ve been told.

But someone here is getting old.

The good news is we sing for free.

The bad news is we sing off key.

Happy.

Happy.

Sound off.

Birthday.

Happy birthday to you!”

Feldman is 9 and is the son of School Committee member Lane Feldman.

Knapp makescover of report

Central Maine Community College President Scott Knapp is on the cover of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s annual report.

Knapp is featured because he served as the first student government president at Green Bay. The cover shows him speaking at a campus groundbreaking event in 1967. The story’s called: “The first president. We play ‘Where are they now?’ and catch up with movers and shakers and difference makers. Student leaders past and present.”

Being featured on the cover of your university’s magazine is flattering, Knapp said. “I’m sure those girls who didn’t want to date me in college are eating their hearts out now,” he mused.

The article shows several pictures of Knapp from the 1960s. To read the story go to: http://www.cmcc.edu/Newly%20Added%20Documents/AroundCampusNovember08.pdf.
