LEWISTON – Firefighters are looking at arson as a possible cause of the Saturday night blaze that heavily damaged a Webber Street home.

“It’s very suspicious,” fire Capt. Larry Morin said on Sunday evening. “Nothing could go that fast.”

Morin estimated the value of the damage caused by the fire at $150,000. He said the building suffered about $120,000 in damage and the value of the contents of the house was pegged at $30,000.

No one was hurt battling the blaze, which was called in to dispatchers about 9 p.m. The fire continued smoldering after 11 p.m.

“We’re still working on a cause,” Morin said.

He identified the occupants of the 535 Webber St. home as Chris Ouelette, Wendy Williamson and an unnamed youngster. They weren’t home when the fire erupted.

The Fire Department’s Criminal Investigation Division is working with Lewiston police in probing the case, Morin and police Lt. Donald Mailhot each said. Police Detective Roland Godbout has been assigned to work with fire Inspector Paul Ouellette.

Morin said Sunday evening that he believes police have already questioned someone about the blaze. Mailhot, however, noted no one has been arrested in the case.

He said additional information wouldn’t be available until sometime today, once Godbout files his investigative report.
