LEWISTON – For the fourth straight weekend, weather forecasters are warning of weather not conducive to the beach or lawn work.
“It’s not going to be a particularly stellar weekend, by any means,” said James Brown, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Gray. “It’s going to be mostly showery. It won’t be a steady rain, but it will be cloudy and cool.”
The forecast is familiar. The area has not seen sunshine on a weekend since the middle of April. Sports events have been canceled four weeks in a row. Lawns are going unmowed unless homeowners can get to them in the middle of busy workweeks. Weekend golf hacks are seething, and there are few people toting around picnic baskets. Even the weather experts are getting irritable.
“Enough is enough,” Brown said.
Rain is not unusual in May, but weather patterns marring the weekends lately are more typical of April, according to Brown. The cold systems that move over the area tend to linger for days and sunshine has been scarce.
“You know how it is,” Brown said. “Things don’t normally shape up around here until July, anyway.”
Today may prove deceptive. The sun might shine during the early morning, tricking people into thinking the day might be all right. Don’t be fooled, says Brown. Showers will not be far behind and they are likely to linger into next week.
It was unclear Friday whether Oxford Plains Speedway will have to cancel shows scheduled for the weekend. If it happens, it will be the third weekend in a row that events were canceled due to rain.
