Camp Marez, the site of Tuesday’s deadly attack on members of Maine’s 133d Engineer Battalion and others, is near Mosul Airport. Camps Diamondback and Clairborne are nearby.
Mosul Airport is about 200 miles north of Baghdad, just south of the city of Mosul. The airbase is served by an 8,700-foot runway. According to the “Gulf War Air Power Survey,” there were eight hardened aircraft shelters at Mosul as of 1991.
Camp Marez, also known as Fire Base Glory, is adjacent to the airfield. It has served as a home to the 101st Airborne Division, as well as the 133d Engineers from Maine and other units.
The origin of the nickname “Fire Base Glory” isn’t clear. A single Army news story refers to the camp as Fire Base Glory.
Speculation holds that the name may stem from Firebase Gloria, which came under siege during the Tet offensive of the Vietnam War. A movie about the battle that included that name was made in 1989.
In early 2004, Fire Base Glory was officially renamed Camp Marez.
