LEWISTON – A pinched electrical cord caused a radio to melt and part of a mattress to burn Monday in a dorm room at Wentworth Adams Hall on the Bates College campus.

The student who lives in the dorm was away for school vacation when smoke filled the room at about 10 a.m., fire officials said. No one was hurt.

Crews made quick work of the small blaze, but water and smoke damaged a bed, carpeting, clothes and other items in the dorm room.

The building was evacuated briefly while firefighters snuffed out flames and began to explore the origin of the blaze.

Officials said a radio cord plugged into a socket next to the bed became pinched as the mattress pressed up against it.

The radio eventually melted and part of the mattress caught fire. A wall near the bed was scorched and soot spread throughout the room, officials said.

Fire and electrical inspectors were called in to investigate the blaze. Students were allowed to return to the building before noon.
