Two horses, valued at $600, the property of the City of Auburn, were electrocuted on Holland Street, Lewiston, near the works of the Texas Oil Co. about noon yesterday. The team is one that is used at the Auburn city farm and was being used to haul coal from a point near where the accident occurred to the Auburn farm. A wire carrying 2,200 volts, used to supply power to the Murphy Stone sheds, nearby, had been broken by limbs of a tree which had fallen onto it, caused by the storm, and lay in the street. The driver of the team, Charles Lalonde, saw the wire but suspected no danger and drove onto it, When the horses stepped onto the wire they were immediately electrocuted. With Lalonde in the team was C.R. Lee. Both men jumped and escaped injury, other than slight shocks, though it hard to understand why they were not electrocuted also. The wire could not have been in the road more than two or three minutes before the team came along, as this team and others had been passing continually during the forenoon and the Electric Co., received word of the incident before; they were notified by the Murphy Co. that the power had been shut off.
