100 years ago, 1910

The boys of the old Excelsior, with their sturdy old engine, came out in the square on Turner Street, Auburn, last evening and gave the machine its last tryout before the muster onMonday, opening day of the State Fair. While some of the members are unable to take an active part, all are enthusiastic and with the aid of enough young men expected to be in attendance at the fair, they hope to carry off first honors in their division, Class 2.

50 years ago, 1960

Mrs. Rita Robichaud of Central Ave., Lewiston, yesterday found a large spider identified unofficially as an American tarantula clinging to a drape at her home. Its bite is painful but reportedly no more dangerous than most species of spiders found in this country. The normal habitation of the American Tarantula is the Southwestern United States and Central America.

25 years ago 1985

“We are all done for another year. We’re all set for Jerry’s kids,” summed up Richard Desjardins, local coordinator for the annual Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy.

Desjardins said that collections at all levels — local, statewide and nationally —   were up significantly over last year’s telethon. Desjardins was in charge of the Lewiston-Auburn area telephone center, located at McCann Realty in Lewiston.
