LISBON FALLS — Jayne Boyer, a local nurse at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, is preparing to go on a surgical mission trip to Nicaragua as part of the Amigos for Christ program. Boyer will spend 10 days, beginning Oct. 14, assisting an orthopedic team from the United States to provide free surgical care to Nicaraguan patients at the St. Martin de Porres Mission.

Boyer became involved with the Amigos for Christ Mission approximately six years ago, making two trips to Nicaragua each year. In the spring, her team meets with potential patients to evaluate their needs for surgery in the fall.

In a five day period, the orthopedic team will treat 50 to 60 cases in a free-standing clinic, with two operating rooms. The team must bring all its own supplies including implants and instruments on each trip because there is no permanent building in which to store them safely. The mission is currently in the process of building a permanent facility to store supplies.

The Lisbon United Methodist Church on School Street will host a spaghetti supper from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1, to help raise funds for Boyer’s mission trip.

Tickets may be purchased for $6 for adults and $3 for children at the door. Donations may also be sent to the Lisbon United Methodist Church, School Street, Lisbon Falls, Maine 04252, by making checks out to LUMC and writing “Nicaragua Mission” on the memo line.
