RANGELEY — Twenty citizens from Rangeley and the surrounding area recently completed the first Citizens Academy held by the Rangeley Border Patrol Station. Participants received classroom and hands-on instruction on the training and programs implemented by Border Patrol agents for successfully completing their mission.

The academy informed the participants on the overall mission and function of the U.S. Border Patrol and the Houlton Sector. It was open to all citizens, 18 years of age and above, who were interested in learning about the Border Patrol’s history, legal authority, mission, operations and partnerships. Attendees received approximately 15 hours of instruction within a period of five-weeks from Border Patrol agents and various guest speakers, including other federal, local and international law enforcement agencies.

“The Citizens Academy is a great conduit for citizens to gain knowledge of our agency and creates an open dialogue with the citizens that we serve,” said Patrol Agent in Charge Jeff Beauregard. “The participants and guest speakers from our partners made our first academy such a success and we look forward to implementing academies in the future.”
